Amazon renames Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+, adds AI narration
The price moves from $9.99 to $11.99 a month as Amazon folds AI-narrated audiobooks into the rebrand
Amazon has renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+, the outlet reported, moving the subscription price from its original $9.99 launch rate in 2014 to $11.99 a month. The service now offers over 5 million e-books, up from an initial 2,000 e-books among more than 600,000 titles, alongside audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines, according to the report.
The rebrand adds AI narration for certain titles through Virtual Voice, a tool currently in beta as part of Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform, ZDNet reported as cited by the outlet. The outlet noted the announcement has drawn a fair amount of negative discourse.
The outlet also reported that Amazon-owned Audible previously rolled out AI narration for audiobooks and was sued by publishers over it, and that Spotify announced its own AI narration feature in 2025 through a partnership with ElevenLabs. Amazon separately released new Kindle Paperwhite and Colorsoft devices earlier in October, the outlet reported.
A new name and two extra dollars a month is the easy part to understand. The part worth sitting with is Virtual Voice landing inside KDP right as Audible's own AI narration push has already put Amazon in a lawsuit with publishers, per the article. Different division, same company, same question: who's reading your book out loud, and did anyone ask you first.
Here's what actually changed this week: the name, the price, and the arrival of AI narration inside the same KDP system you already use to publish. That's it. That's what's confirmed.
But "that's it" is doing some work here. The article points out that Virtual Voice sits inside KDP — your platform, not some separate Amazon division you can shrug off. And it draws a direct line to Audible, Amazon's other audiobook arm, which rolled out AI narration and ended up in a lawsuit with publishers over it. Spotify has gone the same direction with ElevenLabs. Three companies, one trend, and now it's sitting inside the tool you use to publish.
What this means for you: if you have or are considering an audiobook edition, Virtual Voice is now part of the menu, not a side experiment. The article doesn't tell us whether it's opt-in, opt-out, or how royalties shake out differently from human narration — and I won't pretend otherwise. What we do know is that Amazon's sibling company hit legal trouble doing exactly this, and that's not a comforting data point to have sitting next to a brand-new feature inside your own publishing dashboard.
So here's the move this week: open your KDP account and actually look at the audiobook options under your titles. Don't take my word for what's there — go see it yourself, because the article doesn't specify the mechanics and neither will I. If Virtual Voice shows up as a setting on your books, read whatever terms are attached before you touch it. A rename is cosmetic. A new AI narration feature living inside your publishing dashboard, launched by the same company currently being sued over AI narration elsewhere, is not something to scroll past.
