Air Mail's Wolfe Prizes pay two debut authors $10,000 each

Sarah Anderson and Carlos Barragan won the second annual Tom Wolfe Literary Prizes for satire and long-form reportage, Publishers Weekly reported.

Air Mail's Tom Wolfe Literary Prizes, now in their second year, named two debut authors as winners, Publishers Weekly reported. Sarah Anderson won the fiction prize for Fallow, a satirical novel about a woman who becomes the first in-house surrogate for executives at a corporation called the Company. Carlos Barragan, a New York Times reporter, won the reportage prize for The Yahoo Boys, a group profile of Nigerian scammers who deceived his mother, expanded from one of his articles. Each winner receives $10,000 and a trophy made from a 3D-printed replica of Wolfe's homburg hat, lent by his widow Sheila for scanning.

Editor-in-chief Julia Vitale said the prizes aim to counter a book boom centered on book club novels and romantasy, and a shortage of new long-form reporting talent, calling literary journalism "really struggling right now." Montblanc sponsors the awards, chosen this year from a shortlist of six titles per category; both winning books will be showcased at the Strand in New York. The nominating committee included Alexandra Wolfe, Sloane Crosley, Christian Lorentzen, Emily Ratajkowski, Emma Roberts, Karah Preiss, Montblanc's Alexa Schilz, and last year's winners Vincenzo Latronico and Meghan Daum.

Coral’s read

Two debut writers just got $10,000 apiece and a trophy shaped like Tom Wolfe's own homburg hat, for writing a satirical novel and a long-form group profile. Editor Julia Vitale says both lanes are starved for new talent right now, and she's betting AI's slow strangling of search-bait journalism will push more money toward the kind of writing that makes you want to "read the actual thing." That's a bet, not a guarantee, but it's one more prize, one more shortlist, and one more editor on record saying long-form narrative work still has a home. If you write satire or long-form reportage and don't already track this prize, you're missing a door that's open right now.
