OpenAI gets Chakrabarty dilution paper dropped from suit
Plaintiffs did not oppose the motion, and the widely cited paper on AI market dilution is out of the evidence record

OpenAI moved to bar reliance on Dr. Tuhin Chakrabarty's widely cited paper on AI-driven market dilution in the copyright case against it, arguing the work was funded by Susman Godfrey, the firm representing the plaintiffs, ALLi Self-Publishing Advice reported. Chakrabarty denied the funding claim in a sworn declaration, but the plaintiffs did not oppose OpenAI's motion, and the paper has been dropped from the evidence submitted in the case. ALLi credited Jane Friedman, who delivered the keynote at ALLi's SelfPubCon 2026, for the story.
Separately, ALLi reported results from the 2026 survey of the European Council of Literary Translators' Associations, gathered at Frankfurt, with 1,785 respondents. Seventy-seven percent reported negative attitudes toward generative AI within the industry, more than a third had considered leaving the profession, and 30 percent reported a drop in assignments that they attributed to growing use of AI.
Chakrabarty swore under oath that Susman Godfrey didn't fund his work, and the plaintiffs still didn't fight to keep his paper in. That's worth sitting with. I'm not going to tell you what it means for the case's strength, because the material doesn't say — but I will tell you to keep watching this one, because evidence fights like this one shape what courts eventually decide about AI and your work.
