Authors Guild clarifies process for AI compensation claims

The Anthropic settlement stopped being a headline this week and became a cheque. When your reconciliation notice lands, look at one number — the split. The default is 50/50, and a run of publishers have "mistakenly" ticked 100%. You have 60 days to fight it before a court-appointed Special Master decides for you.
The Anthropic settlement stopped being a headline this week and became a cheque. Authors claimed 440,490 of the 482,460 eligible works — a 91% turnout that tells you writers finally believe the money is real. It is: after fees, it pencils out to about $2,931 a book.
Now the part the Guild slipped into a "clarification." When your reconciliation notice lands — they went out between 2 and 4 September, with a claim number, a PIN and a portal login — look at one number. The split. The default is 50/50, author and publisher. A run of publishers have "mistakenly" ticked 100% — all of it, to their side. Call it a clerical slip if you are feeling generous; either way, it is your money walking off the page.
You get 60 days to fight it, extended from 30. Let that clock run out and a court-appointed Special Master sets your split for you — and a Special Master knows the default, not your contract.
If the number is wrong, the portal takes your documentation and logs the dispute. Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster have all opened dedicated inboxes for exactly this, and the administrator's line is 1-877-206-2314.
So it is a five-minute job with a four-figure stake: open the notice, check the percentage, and if it is not 50/50, dispute it now — not in October.
Why it matters to you: Real settlement money moves this quarter — but only if you open the notice and challenge a wrong split inside the 60-day window.
